Based on Aunty Loraine Padgham’s deep knowledge of the Taungurung language and culture and the success of her previous books, Indigi Print is proud to announce our receipt of an ILA Government Grant to produce four additional bilingual children’s books in the Taungurung language. This achievement recognises our strong commitment to supporting language preservation and ensuring that future generations have access to culturally grounded stories told from a Fist Nations perspective.

Loraine Padgham, Taungurung Elder and author, supporting First Nations language preservation through bilingual children's books.

The books made possible by this grant pass on cultural knowledge of the Taungurung people from a time prior to colonisation, with a particular focus on the Nira Balug clan. Through storytelling, the books depict their culturally rich daily family life and highlight their life as itinerant farmers who cared for Country. This way of life enabled First Nations people to sustainably manage and benefit from the abundant and rich food sources available across Taungurung Country through the changing seasons. The books reinforce the deep connections of the Taungurung people to land, culture, knowledge, and tradition.

The project fits within our broad, long term strategic objective to promote and preserve the First Nations languages and cultures of Australia and we would welcome the opportunity to partner with other First Nations groups on similar projects.
